CUSTOM BLAZERS & TROUSERS COLLECTION

The Navy Blazer

There are numerous stories about the birth of the blazer. Some tie its origins to clubs at English colleges, while others link the blazer to military uniforms. Ralph Lauren, the icon of American fashion, describes the HMS Blazer as the birthplace of this sport coat classic.

Anticipating a visit from Queen Victoria, the frigate’s captain, aware of his crew’s ragtag appearance, outfitted his men in double-breasted navy jackets complete with insignia brass buttons. The queen loved the smart appearance and ordered the look worn throughout the Royal Navy.

Iconic and Enduring

Over the centuries, little has changed in the blazer design, although the fabric choices have expanded from very traditional wool serge to include a variety of wool weaves, such as hopsack, basket and waffle weave, twill and gabardine, plus lightweight cotton, linen and silk, allowing wearability in every season.

The color options have also evolved to include navy blue, sea blue and true blue. Traditionally dressed up with gray flannel slacks, dress shirt and tie, the blazer can also serve as a cornerstone of your smart-casual wardrobe when worn with chinos, jeans, cords or linen pants and a sport shirt (with or without a tie).

There are items of men’s clothing that are functional. There are things that are versatile. Other things are just cool. But the navy blue blazer is in a class all its own—simple, timeless and always appropriate.
